The first involved using only cardboard slotted together. The challenge was working out how to create a structure without using an adhesives or different materials to join or tie parts together. Using a mix of folded and cut card I managed to construct this from one of my sketches.
Next involved using only wire to create a 'space drawing'. This photograph clearly shows where my talents lie!
It was an attempt to create an interior building environment... however this proved trickier than first thought.
Below is a construction using paper. I manipulated the paper in different ways to achieve different effects, by folding, twisting and scrunching the paper, and using masking tape to hold them in place.
I quite like how the use of scrap sheet music and brown paper give the structures a little bit extra and a bit of a personal feel.
The forth construction (as seen below) was related to one of my 'reflection and distortion' drawings, which where done by the canal, focusing on the reflections in the water. For this we were to use wire and transparent materials only.
I used bubble wrap as a base for the water's surface, since this is a transparent material, already with an interesting surface of it's own. I then interwove shaped sections of wire to resemble the ripples - flatter and closer together at the top (representing the water farthest away) and more spaced out at the bottom (representing the larger ripples nearer to the viewer).
Finally I supported the material with wire so that it could stand by itself.
Now I am not someone who regularly works with 3D, in fact I really struggle at more practical things such as creating structures, especially with unusual and limited materials!
I know this week will be a challenge, and it definitely has been today, however I find it interesting to see how other students approach the project briefs and how their ideas come out. Sometimes the outcomes can be surprising!
