Extra Life Drawing

This afternoon I was a little more productive course-wise and spent 2 hours in the self-directed life drawing session. It was nice there being only 6 of us, as we could discuss poses we'd like the model to do and how long for. It also gave me the opportunity to choose my own materials to use, and I focused on coloured pencils.

In the session we did a selection of 2 minute sketches, three 10 minute sketches, one 35 minute pose (shown on the right) and lots of quick 5 second sketches to capture the form through movement (which I did using a brush pen).

I enjoy the longer poses since it provides the time to sketch out the basic form and proportions before going into the details and adding tone. I'm considering expanding on my life drawing and requesting longer for a specific pose, or perhaps working on the same piece weekly to build it up. I think it would be wonderful to spend many hours working on a large painting when I feel ready.

Also, using reference from one of my super-quick movement sketches, I used the brush pen to capture the simple strokes of curved lines to capture the human form in a style that appears minimalistic and abstract. The rushed flicks of the wrist when having only seconds to sketch produces a beautiful combination of lines that would most likely not be found through more focused and thorough studies.

However.

If there is one thing I have learnt from today it is to BRING A BOTTLE OF WATER TO LIFE DRAWING SESSIONS UNLESS YOU WANT TO RUN THE RISK ON FAINTING IN A VERY WARM STUDIO.

I don't think I've ever wanted a cup of tea more in my life..

..and I've been yawning non-stop ever since.
