For the first one, a mid-tone background was applied using a stick of charcoal spread evenly over the page with the dust removed. When drawing the figure, the highlights were sketched out first, using a rubber, and the darker areas were added in charcoal afterwards. This made it much harder to accurately propertionise the figure, since it involved forming detached 'islands' of light and dark instead of a sketch as a whole.
We then worked on black paper using coloured pencil, so this involved the same difficulties since it is uncommon to focus on the highlighted areas instead of the dark.
All in all though I feel it was an important style of drawing to try out - a little bit different and challenging but variety is good!
