It turns out that I actually really liked the marks and patterns made by the paint-dipped paperclips, so I decided I'd take things a little further and try a portrait. I wasn't aiming for the portrait to be completely accurate, since this would be near-on impossible with the lack of control of the paperclips.
It is based off this reference image. I tried developing more of a technique by using the paperclips in different ways for different parts of the painting. For example, for the smaller detailed areas (such as the eye and ear) I would have my hand close to the paperclips and use the edges to make line marks; for the darker shaded areas I would use a lot of paint and brush the group of paperclips together over the page; and for the lighter shaded parts I would make more use of the string and let the paperclips 'bounce' over the page to create the exciting dotted pattern with strings of paint in between.
