In the contextual studies lecture today there was talk of a great number of artists and their corresponding movements through the 20th century. However among all of the cubists and surrealists and abstract expressionists, one name caught my interest and that was Lucian Freud.
He focused mainly on portraits, painting detailed realist works but using muted colour palettes to promote a deeper bleak mood.
I will have to look further into his work sometime.
