Lecture - Colour Theory

I'm a little behind on lecture notes, so forgive me as I catch up..

Colour is one of the formal elements (of which include line, shape, texture, form etc.) - these are what create the concept/idea.
I am an 'aesthete', since aesthetics is the science of beauty.
Colour appreciation is subjective. Simon is also of the mindset that axe murderers live in the hideously coloured houses of Balamory.
It is also perfectly plausible (and probable) that although colours we see share the same name, we may be perceiving them differently from one another ('my blue is your green!'). This also relates to colour being similar to language - it can be perceived differently through cultures.
Descriptive words of colours are subjective and relative - they're used when making comparisons.
Different colour palettes explore different moods, feelings and meanings - colour should be explored and experienced psychologically and symbolically. Examples of colour palettes are:
* complementary contrast - using a complementary pair
* cold/warm contrast - using cooler and hotter colours together
* contrast of tertiary greys - complementary colours mixed together
* contrast of extension - a larger bold colour that stands out from a mix of similar colours
* contrast of saturation - using bold intense colours with more muted ones
* spatial contrast - using white and black to 'pull out' or 'push back' colours
